Vocal Ensembles

Honors Chorale

Honors Chorale consists of approximately 25 auditioned men and women who meet on a daily basis during the school day. Students enrolled in Concert Choir may audition at the end of the school year for Honors Chorale. The Honors Chorale performs on the Winter and Spring Concerts as well as at the BCPS Adjudication, THS Graduation and other school and community events. Students in this class receive Honors credit.

Concert Choir

Concert Choir consists of approximately 40 men and women who meet on a daily basis during the school day. Concert Choir prepares students with basic sight reading (rhythmic and melodic) and choral ensemble skills in order to advance into Honors Chorale. The concert choir peroforms on the Winter and Spring concerts and THS Graduation.

String Ensembles

Chamber Orchestra GT

This string ensemble is an advanced level performance group that meets on a daily basis during the school day. The Symphonic Orchestra rehearses and performs Grade 5 and 6 literatures. Several of these students have participated in the BSO "Side by Side" concerts and BCPS All-Honors and All-State music competitions. This group earned "Superior" ratings at the BCPS Orchestra Music Assessments last year performing Grade 6 (highest difficulty) literature.   Students in this ensemble are strongly encouraged to audition for the Baltimore County All Honors Orchestra. Students in this class receive GT credit.

Concert Orchestra

This string ensemble is an intermediate level performance group.   The Concert Orchestra meets on a daily basis and rehearses and performs Grade 3 and 4 literatures. Fundamental concepts of tuning, tone production, and string technique are reinforced and developed in order to prepare students to qualify for Honors Symphonic Orchestra. The concert orchestra performs on the Wonter and Spring concerts.

Wind Ensembles

Concert Band

This ensemble is an intermediate level performance group that meets on a daily basis. Fundamental concepts of tuning, tone production, and wind and percussion techniques are reinforced and developed. This group performs Grade 3 and Grade 4 literatures with the goal of preparing students to qualify for Honors Wind Ensemble. The Concert Band performs on the Winter and Spring concerts and THS Graduation.

Wind Ensemble GT

This ensemble is an advanced level performance group that meets on a daily basis. The Wind Ensemble rehearses and performs Grade 5 and 6 literatures. Several of these students participate in the BSO "Side by Side" concerts, BCPS Honors, and MD state music competitions. Students in this ensemble are strongly encouraged to audition for the Baltimore County All Honors Band. Students in this class receive GT credit. The Wind Ensemble perfoms on the Winter and Spring concerts as well as the BCPS Adjudication and THS Graduation.

Special Ensembles

Jazz Ensemble

This ensemble is a select performance group that meets on a daily basis. Intermediate through advanced literatures are rehearsed and performed. The focus is on developing specific techniques of jazz performance and improvisation across a wide variety of styles within the idiom. This group performs at numerous community events. Several students were selected to participate in the BCPS Honors jazz group last year. Students in this ensemble are strongly encouraged to audition for the Baltimore County All Honors Band and the Honors Jazz Band.

Percussion Ensemble

This ensemble is new to THS for the 2010-2011 school year. Percussionists / drummers who would normally be enrolled in "band" are now placed in Percussion Ensemble. This group meets on a daily basis and focuses on classical/concert percussion, African percussion and drumming, and marching percussion. It is expected that this group will perform throughout the school year at various events.

Towson Marching Generals!

Participation in the Towson High School Marching Band is available to all students in the music program. Sign up for marching band is in the spring with a mandatory meeting for all students and parents on June 4, 2008. The purpose of marching band is to provide an experience where:

•  A complex competitive marching field show is presented at football games and tournaments as well as local parade appearances.
•  Camaraderie and school spirit are positively fostered.
•  Rhythmic movement and music are combined as an educational tool.

The marching band meets during the Fall quarter on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 2:30 - 4:30 PM. Highlights from this season will include performances at all home football games, the BCPS Marching Band Showcase, Homecoming pep rally and game, Reisterstown Festival Parade, Columbus Day Parade in Baltimore, and the Hagerstown Halloween Parade.

Guitar Ensembles and Classes

Guitar I

Guitar Level 1 is a sequential program of year-long instruction comprised of eight units. Through the study of music theory, vocabulary, musical styles, historical reference, and the opportunities for performance on acoustic guitar, this course satisfies the Maryland State requirements one (1) fine arts credit.

Guitar II

Guitar II is a continuation of what has been learned in Guitar I . Students will continue to work to develop proficiency on the instrument. Students must take Guitar I before taking Guitar II.  

Guitar III / Guitar Ensemble

Guitar III expands upon the Guitar II class. We are excited to offer this advanced level of guitar for students who have successfully completed the Guitar II class and wish to further their studies in a guitar ensemble setting.

Music Technology

Foundations of Music Technology

Although this class is not really an ensemble, it does satisfy the fine arts requirement for graduation. Music technology is a great class that focuses on composing using the computer and the MIDI keyboard. Any student may sign up for music technology regardless of pervious musical ability. This class meets on a daily basis during the school day and is a full year course.
